The most effective flies on Andros Island imitate the shrimp and baitfish that are the prominent part of the bonefish diet. Pink, tan, and orange are the colors that are most effective. The most common sizes are 2--in deeper water (over two feet) and size 4--in skinny water. In very shallow water, it is sometimes necessary to use size 6, to avoid spooking the fish.
McVay's Gotcha The Gotcha is one of the most effective flies-probably the most effective fly-on Andros Island and was developed here. The story goes that Ted McVay and his son Jim were fishing Andros Island and Jim snipped some yellow carpet fibers from a taxi and used them to tie a new fly. It was very effective and every time he hooked a fish, his guide would say, "Gotcha!".
